Essential Oils for New borns and Babies

First CONGRATULATIONS! If you are about to be a parent, or are one.
Being a parent is the greatest gift you can receive.
Although being a parent is a lot of work it still has it's rewards.

There are so many medicines out there that we can use,
but why if we can use essential oils to help and save
putting harmful drugs into your babies systems.

While Essential oils are very safe, the liver can only process so much at a time,
so there’s no reason to overdo or waste money by using them undiluted.
We dilute for little ones to avoid irritation or sensitization,
to aid in absorption and also to expose the babies to a lower amount of the oils.
For newborns/infants/babies dilute 1 drop of essential oil per 1 tablespoon of carrier oil

The most gentle for little babies is Roman Chamomile. Always dilute 1-3 drops of essential oil per 1 Tablespoon of carrier oil (virgin or fractionated coconut oil, olive, sweet almond, jojoba, etc) and 1-3 drops of essential oil per 1 teaspoon for children and adults.
Places to put the oil - behind the ears, feet, clothing or blanket you are holding the baby with while getting baby to sleep.

COLDS: Diffuse 2 drops of melaleuca, lemon, or lavender at bedtime and again during the day. Mix 1 drop of melaleuca, demon, or lavender with 1 Tablespoon carrier oil; use a small amount to massage upper chest and back at each diaper change.
I made a mixture of melaleuca, lemon, lavender & onguard (3 drops each), mixed with about a Tablespoon of strait coconut oil. I keep it in a little tiny jar and apply it to my kids throughout the day on their chest and back until their colds are gone.
Good for babies and kids.

COLIC: Mix 1 drop of lavender with 1 Tablespoon carrier oil. Gently massage on a few drops into the abdomen, stroking clockwise to follow the direction of the colon.

Calming: Dilute Lavender, or Serenity and apply the the feet and on your chest if you are holding them to promote relaxation. You can wipe extra oils on their blanket/clothes and Fractionated Coconut oil does not stain but you don't need to dilute if you are adding oils to a clothe or blanket. Unless it's a stronger oil you are using.
Diffusing with an AromaLite is also very helpful as well as daily infant massage.

Ears: Dilute lavender and melaleuca and apply around the ear (never put oils IN the ear) frequently, massaging down towards the lymph nodes to encourage drainage. You can also use the diluted oils on a cotton ball placed in the ear – use a bandaid to help keep it in place. *Please always supervise your baby when using a cotton ball and/or bandaid to make sure they do not get either into their mouths.

Respiratory support: Dilute Melaleuca and Lemon and apply the chest, back and feet several times an hour. A combo of Frankincense and Lavender can be very helpful when the chest is tight and loud.

Teething: Use diluted Lavender, Roman Chamomile, or Serenity along the jawline as often as every 15-30 minutes to soothe. For older babies I've used diluted Clove (specific brand only contact me for what I use), 1 drop in 1 oz of Vegetable glycerin,
and applied to gums to numb without chemicals!
Also, try using onguard or clove with coconut oil and rub on gums.

Skin: Dilute 1 drop of each of Lavender and Melaleuca in unrefined or fractionated coconut oil or Lanolin (I love lanolin for rashes and dry skin!) to soothe the skin. Apply each time you change their diaper. I like to use a glass spray bottle for this. Use damp, soft paper towels to wipe or rinse your wipes well before using to avoid any further irritating the rash with chemicals.

Digestive support : Dilute 1 drop each of lavender and orange in 2 TB carrier oil and rub baby’s tummy in a clockwise direction for at least 30 seconds for digestive support.
Apply every 15-30 mins until their tummy is settled.

Comfort - Just add a drop or two of oil to a stuffed animal or blanket
and they can cuddle up with it and fall easily asleep!
Careful using blankets in a baby crib. Please follow all safety guidelines for stuffed animals, toys and blankets near your baby/toddler when they sleep. Do not use strong oils undiluted on their animal or blanket, like peppermint, eucalyptus or cinnamon as it could burn their eyes or be too strong for them to breathe in.

DIARRHEA: Mix 1 drop Roman chamomile with 1

DIAPER RASH: Combine 1 drop German chamomile and 1 drop of lavender with 1 drop of whole milk. Add the mixture to bathwater, and swich around with hand before bathing the baby. Keep oils away from the baby's eyes and face. If the baby is allergic to milk then try using an oil.

FEVER: Mix 1 drop of lavender with 1 Tablespoon carrier oil. Apply a small amount on the bottoms of the feet, the back of the neck, and behind the ears. Cover the feet with socks so the baby won't get the essential oils in his/her mouth.
I also added Peppermint to the mix.

REFLUX:

All babies spit up at times, but the difference is

"Happy Spitter" = Baby appears happy and doesn't seem to be in pain or discomfort

"Refulx" (GERD) Gastroesophageal Refulx Disease = Gagging, chocking, coughing, burping, hiccouphing a lot, fussiness, trouble sleeping, frequent spitting or vomiting (if it's projectile, it is more than GERD)

Severe GERD is: Extreme fussiness and/or crying associated with eating, refusing to eat causing poor weight gain, breathing problems, back arching, hoarseness, sore throat, severe congestion/chronic sinus or eat infections, spitting up blood or bile.

For moderate and less severe cases of reflux general tips are:
Feed your baby smaller but more frequent meals then burp right away, Allow your baby to sleep on an incline and keep baby upright as much as possible during and after feedings.

**Advice given that you may want to double think before doing:**
Thicken your baby's milk (breast or formula) with infant cereal.
-It may lessen the amount of spit-up but it may not actually help with the reflux.
The cereal is supposed to help the milk stay down in the stomach but it is doing in all likelyhood is causing the baby to experience Silent Reflux which is where the stomach contents come up and baby swallows it back down rather than spitting up. This can cause a pattern of baby having diarrhea and then constipation back and forth.
-Also, babies don't have proper enzymes needed to digest grains at a young age.

Natural Reflux Remedies That Actually Work
Healthy gut flora for baby. Some cases of reflux may be due to an overpopulation of bad bacteria. Adding in good bacteria in the form of probiotics will help to overrun the bad bacteria. Find a probiotic that is made especially for infants, like this one. Powdered probiotics can be given in a spoon with only a few drops of water, or can be added to pumped breast milk and given in a bottle. You can even apply the probiotics to your nipple and allow Baby to swallow it while breastfeeding. Nurse in a more upright position. Often, reflux is the result of Baby drinking too much milk too fast. If you’re breastfeeding and have forceful let down, make sure to nurse in positions that allow Baby to have better control of how much milk they’re getting.

Feed Baby from only one breast per feeding. Sometimes moms produce an overabundance of milk. If you’re one of those moms, nurse Baby on one breast only per feeding. This allows Baby to get both the foremilk (the more watery thirst quenching milk) and the hindmilk (the more rich, fatty, nourishing milk).

Try an elimination diet. The most common triggers are dairy, soy, wheat, and eggs. Eliminate one food at a time and for at least a week. Your child may have an actual allergy to something you’re eating.

Try Chiropractic Care. There are times this is definately needed and a Chiropractor that knows what they are doing there is no fear having them work on your child. Most of the time your baby may need a minor adjustment. Think about it they are cramed into your tummy and we always say when they come out I can't believe that they fit in our tummy. Definately ask around to see what chiropractor will be best for your baby.
If you live near me contact me and I can give you the name of my own chiropractor.

Hazelwood Reflux Jewelry - Baltic Amber teething necklaces, Hazelwood necklaces proved to be very effective at helping to ease the acidity related to my babies’ reflux.
The hazelwood beads (made from the hazelwood plant) are supposed to draw excess acid from their body & balance their pH levels. The necklace is designed to break before it could ever choke them.

Baby carrier - your baby likes to be close to you. Choose one that allows baby to be more upright with no pressure on the belly.

Swaddling your baby tight they will like that.

Castor oil packs. Castor oil has amazing detoxing abilities, and can help flush the body of whatever is causing a problem. Castor oil can either just be rubbed on Baby’s belly several times a day or you can use the castor oil pack method. Dip a cloth (cotton, hemp, wool, or flannel- a cloth diaper would be perfect) in castor oil. Apply it to Baby’s belly. Wrap with plastic wrap (to contain messes from dripping oil) and cover with a blanket. Leave it on for 30-60 minutes, if possible. Then, give Baby a warm bath in filtered water with a few drops of lavender oil. Any babies who’ve dealt with reflux aren’t able to sleep well. Even once they are no longer experiencing reflux symptoms they may continue to be poor sleepers. This may simply be a result of never having had a chance to learn to sleep well. Once your baby seems to be free from symptoms of reflux, make teaching healthy sleep patterns a priority.
